Visual Communications I

Grade: 10-12

Semester: Year long course

Credit: 1.0 elective.

Prerequisite: Basic familiarity with computers

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Visual communication is the communication of ideas through the visual display of information. Primarily associated with two dimensional images, it includes: art, signs, photography, typography, drawing fundamentals, color and digital resources. In this class the student will use Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign software to create a variety of projects that reflect real world design applications. The students will gain an understanding of the principles and elements of design and in class critiques will help the students expand their knowledge of what “good design” is.

Visual Communications II

Grade: 10-12

Semester: Year long course

Credit: 1.0 elective.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Visual Communications I

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This class expands the concepts and skills learned in Visual Communications I by offering the students the chance to work in teams, work with real world clients and work at determining the appropriate themes, target market and concepts for their projects. A deeper understanding of the Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign software and techniques will be implemented. Students will complete this class with a finished archive and portfolio of their artwork that will help them get into design and art colleges.

Digital Photography

Grade: 10-12

Semester: Year long course

Credit: 1.0 elective.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course introduces the aesthetic and technical theories and techniques of digital photography. Topics include camera and lens operation, color theory, exposure, contrast, white balance, composition, lighting, effects, creative shooting, image editing, and output. Students undertake various projects and exercises to develop their personal photographic styles.

Dragon Publications

Grade: 11-12

Semester: Year long course

Credit: 1.0 elective

Prerequisite: Students must apply for this concentrated studies class.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Application process includes a portfolio with written and graphic samples, interview and 2 Instructor recommendations. English and Media Arts/Design GPAs must be a B or better. (2 years of graphic arts/design is preferred). Extra! Extra! Calling all Artists, Writers and Photographers! Join Dragon Publications to work on our school Newspaper, Literary Magazine and Yearbook. Students will also assist faculty and administration with various graphic or marketing tasks throughout the year. The Dragon Publications class will be a collaborative team of reporters, editors, photographers, illustrators and graphic artists to plan, create and publish everything Dragon.
