INTRODUCTION TO GRAPHIC ARTS (Freshman Wheel)

  • Semester: 9 weeks
  • Credit: .25 elective
  • Pre-requisite: None

Course Description

In this course, freshmen will learn the principles of design, and the basics of Adobe Photoshop. Projects will include things like photo restoration, working with layers, creating original artwork and more.

Course Goals

  • Navigate and use several tools effectively in Adobe Photoshop to design and manipulate photographs
  • Explore the elements and principles of design, and address how they aid in making digital art effectively communicate its intended message
  • Form a basic understanding of the field of Graphic Arts and how it can be used

GRAPHIC ARTS I

  • Grade: 10-12
  • Semester: Year long course
  • Credit: 1.0 elective
  • Pre-Requisite: Successfully complete Introduction to Graphic Arts (Freshman Wheel) (or equivalent)

Course Description

This course will explore the use of digital programs currently used in the graphics and design industry (Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign) to make, create, edit and manipulate typography, photos, animations, and various works of digital art. Students will also learn how to integrate basic elements and principles of design in conjunction with necessary tools and techniques of the computer programs to create art that is original, creative, and communicative of its intended message.

Course Goals

  • Navigate and use several tools effectively in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign to design and manipulate graphics, typography, photographs, and simple animation.
  • Explore the elements and principles of design, and address how they aid in making digital art effectively communicate its intended message.
  • Create a digital portfolio of work which addresses a variety of the National Core Arts Standards.
  • Critique, discuss, and reflect upon the design and artistic choices made with each project.

GRAPHIC ARTS II

  • Grade: 10-12
  • Semester: Year long course
  • Credit: 1.0 elective
  • Pre-Requisite: Successful completion of Graphic Arts I

Course Description

This class expands the concepts and skills learned in Graphic Arts I by offering the students the chance to work in teams, work with real world clients and work at determining the appropriate themes, target market and concepts for their projects. A deeper understanding of the Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign software and techniques will be implemented.  Students will also create professional work for the school including, yearbook logos, billboards, postcards, t-shirts and more.

Course Goals

  • Effectively use tools in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign to design and manipulate graphics, typography, photographs and simple animation as well as professional projects with clients in the community.
  • Explore the elements and principles of design, and address how they aid in making digital art effectively communicate its intended message.
  • Create a digital portfolio of work which addresses the National Core Arts Standards.
  • Critique, discuss, and reflect upon the design and artistic choices made with each project.
  • Host an end-of-year gallery showing in the local community.

DATA students have the opportunity to explore the world of digital arts and technology and engage with classmates in expressing their ideas. Digital Arts and Technology Academy is a public charter school for grades 7-12 in Albuquerque, NM.
